Foreign media, December 15th: Norwegian aluminum producer NorskHydro said on Thursday that demand for low-carbon aluminum will boom as industrial customers seek to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Demand for low-carbon aluminum will grow by 20% a year through 2030, out of a 3% increase in total aluminum demand, as customers ranging from carmakers to construction firms and packaging firms seek to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Hydro said. .
The Norwegian company announced an agreement with Mercedes-Benz on Thursday to supply the German automaker with low-carbon aluminum from 2023.
Growth areas for the group include ramping up sales of low-carbon aluminum to industrial customers and building a plant to recycle electric vehicle batteries, and building and operating solar and wind farms to power its factories and sell to customers, Hydro said.
About half of aluminum production in Europe has been shut down due to a surge in energy costs this year. The Norwegian producer has also cut output at European aluminum smelters, including permanently closing production at its Slovalco plant in Slovakia in September.
