China's southwestern province of Yunnan has ordered aluminum producers to reduce electricity consumption this week, the companies told Reuters on Tuesday.
Yunnan's decision is another sign that soaring energy prices are having a strong impact on global aluminium production, although the impact of domestic prices is currently limited.
Producers were asked to reduce their normal consumption of electricity by about 10 percent between Sept. 13 and Sept. 14, said officials from both producers, who declined to be named because they were not allowed to discuss the order publicly. .
The companies have reduced electricity consumption for normal use by 5 percent from Sept. 10 to Sept. 12, according to an order issued by the Dali Power Supply Bureau, a subsidiary of Yunnan Power Grid.
The power restrictions in the southwestern province come after the region's rainfall this year reduced hydropower supply, which typically accounts for 75% of its electricity.
Yunnan Power Grid declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. The Dali Power Supply Bureau could not be immediately reached.
"This affects about 10% of our capacity," said a source at a large smelter with an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes of electrolytic aluminium.
Zenon Ho, an analyst at Marex Metals, said the reduction in hydropower production and the disappearance of cost advantages should provide some cost support to prices, but rising inventories are also putting pressure on the Chinese market.
The annual production capacity of electrolytic aluminum in Yunnan is 5.25 million tons, accounting for about 10% of China's production capacity.
Shanghai Metal Market forecasts that China's aluminium output in September will drop 3.4% month-on-month to 3.37 million tonnes after power cuts in Yunnan. Source:
